Baby Sign Language

While I was pregnant I started reading a couple of books called ‘Baby Hearts’, ‘Baby Minds’, and ‘Baby Signs’. They are great books written by two reputable authors covering emotional IQ in the under 3 year olds, playing age appropriate and mind challenging games with the under 3s, and sign language for the under 3s. I have really enjoyed reading them (I’m still going on them with the little time I have!) and finding ways to keep BG challenged developmentally, comfortable (one day) with expressing her emotions regardless of how undesirable they might be, and able to communicate effectively before she can talk. My goal in reading these is to give her a head start in learning some lifelong skills so that she grows into very capable and stable young adult.

Only recently I purchased some ‘Signing Time’ DVDs (Series 1, Vol 1-3) to add to the signs I have already been using. They have taught me a lot of new signs and BG really enjoys watching them… me too (in fact I am now considering buying more DVDs so I can learn more and use it when teaching in Early Childhood). It’s amazing how a 6 month old can be captivated so much by the TV. I don’t really like letting her watch too much TV but I suppose the half hour each day of ‘Signing Time’ is ok, right?

So here’s a list of signs we use regularly now (BG doesn’t sign yet although I’m sure you will hear about it when she does):
